Yeah, this topic is very touchy for many pagans. I know some pagans who already thinks the stars and planets fall into specific domains governed by our Gods. They cite various sources to prove this, usually including the Nebra Sky Disc for example so you can see how dubious I take their claims.

However, I personally agree with you. To give a similar albiet more earthly analogue, we have Columbia, the fruitful lady we associated with this cornucopic land and our purpose here as colonists manifesting our destiny. She deserves to be honored more often. I know some pagans who have done blots to her. In a way, she is like our Danu, a goddess we name the land after. There are many places named after Columbia, and she deserves to be recognized by Americans, IMO.

This would be seen as "making shit up" by many people. I find it consistent with my religion though.

You know I really did try to make a "Gods of America" post on them for the 4th, such as Columbia and the since-deified Washington, but I got drunk and slept for 18hr and forgot about it. By then it was the 4th already

Washington is deified in your eyes? I would say he is definitely attaining an uber-legendary status, but I am unsure if this means deification.

In the sense of Augustus at least

I don’t worry about it. As far as I see it, the Gods of Indo-Europeans were preparing us for this step. Everything, including technology, were meant for us to master so that we can seed life and fire on the million worlds, and to extends the dominion of our fathers’ holy fire into the unknown.

For whatever reason I couldn’t reply to your comments and posts earlier. Idk whats going on with that.

But for the most part I’m not sure what “new” gods there would be. What contexts that are new would need to be mapped?

You mention space here but we see deities associated with space and the Abyss in the Vedas and Greek religion. Vishnu, especially Krishna as Brahman is linked with space. Krishna meaning “black”, refers to the Nirguna or formless aspect of Brahman. Nyx is a God of the night. Astraeus, while being a Titan, was an astrological god of stars. Asteria is a Titanness of fallen stars and nocturnal oracles, etc. Solar deities such as Apollo and Helios also satisfy as cosmological or astronomical gods, but you mentioned these.

What new domains outside of space do you think necessitates “new” gods?

Gildhelm's avatar

They could be "new" in the most literal sense, or they could be closer to "reinterpretations", as has already been done across the world as peoples move into new areas and eventually become new peoples, and the names, qualities, and positions of gods shuffle around. I leave this open because I don't know the full extent and quality of what's out there. I doubt people would think of anything except Zeus if they were subjected to the lightning storms on Jupiter, but something like a wormhole or black hole seems fundamentally different from what we have on Earth.

I’d feel like a god could only represent sublime phenomena or elemental ones. Which is highly limited. I think that any entropic god would be associated with something like blackholes. Such as Shiva, as we see in the Vedas that Vishnu transforms into Shiva and stomps the universe into disorganized potential at the end of Brahmas life, in the Maha-Pralaya. Which seems to be somewhat similar to heat death or resemblant of the blackhole phenomena. We could depict Saturn or Cronus covering this too, as they’re gods of chaos, time and entropy as well. I’d think that making deities for incredibly specific or emergent phenomena would make it somewhat silly. Like, a god of space ships, nuclear energy, or something like the internet. To me this seems rather dull and needless.

Chronos would make a lot of sense, given the myth of him consuming the gods of "matter" as well

CritterEnthusiast's avatar

I thought he consumes the Olympians. He was a second generation titan, and as I understand the theogony, they were all chthonic beings as opposed to the Olympians who were mostly solar.

Time consumes the earth, the sea, and the sky (hearth, harvest, and others as well). How it is typically presented at least. Likely similarities in theme to Kala in the Gita, "Time (kāla) I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people."

Thanks for writing this. My knee jerk response is a "Yeah, but".... But I will hold off on doing that. For myself this is fraught because I am just so rooted into the terra firma, I can't grok the deep Out There in any sense, least of all metaphysically.

I've been enjoying a lot of the Reenchantment content from Jonathan Pageaus "Symbolic World" and I think he and Richard Rollin (?) are actually onto something, in this regard as well as in the realm of the Cyberexistance.

Being transplanted to foreign lands, with a wedge of long standing Christianity between, seems to be a significant gulf for me to overcome. I may never get there, at this rate.

So pray to great green Mother Earth and the grim old god of Space,

And the gods of flame and metal whom we've summoned to this place.

Oh you gods of flight and physics, now you have us in your care;

We hope that you will listen to a rocket rider's prayer.

these thoughts were thought before you were even born, boy.

Great poem, but watch your tone unc

song, not poem. rocket riders prayer. wrote 1986 i think

What does your practice look like now with these new thoughts? Are you still worshiping the typical reconstructed Germanic pantheon or are you doing something different now?

Also do you do anything speicifc to try and "reconstruct" the animistic worldview in your daily life? This especially seems like it would be very hard to do living in a primarily urban environment.
